Business on the Beach

It was a busy weekend here at the beach, I believe it was good for all of the businesses. Because we are primarily a vacation destination for most people the majority of the businesses were glad to see the steady stream of traffic heading onto the island. Started Thursday night, loaded cars, SUV's with kids hanging out the windows and plenty of people in the grocery store. I did pass a funny car kind of like a Honda Accord with surfboards, strollers and coolers all strapped to the top of it. They were going to stay for awhile, the way it looked.
I don't think I have seen that much traffic in a long time around here. I left my house which is about a 5 minute walk to the grocery and Lowes Home Improvement store across the street and I had to weave thru a stand still line. I spent about 15 minutes there and came back and the same people were still sitting there. What a mess!

Memorial Day was beautiful so we put the boat in the water, loaded it up with the grill, a cooler and some food and set off to the islands. Being that we live here year round, locals have little islands that we can go to that the tourists don't, so its kind of a meeting place. Its great because there are kids and other adults to visit with. We had a great time getting out and enjoying the warm sun. I forgot to sunscreen parts of my body so I am dealing with sunburn this week!
Based on the amount of people in the stores and those on the streets tells me that it is going to be a good summer season. Remember to look our company up if you want to come to the area at www.bluewatergmac.com, we can help you out.

We love to share our beautiful location on the Crystal coast, we would enjoy having you come and see us at the beach. We appreciate the business.

Welcome Back!

Its kind of an ironic saying, Welcome back! That has several meanings to me this Memorial Day Weekend. For many its a four day weekend, the one that starts the "summer season", cookouts, getting together with friends and family.

Well for me this Memorial Day has special meaning. As many of you know I have two sons that serve us in the military. Ryan is a Captain in the Army and has been serving in Afghanistan with his group since December. I have been keeping up with him on the internet and the creation of web cams,Yahoo and Skype. I have been able to see him and feel like we are talking in person. He and I are talking right this minute... the great part is that he is on his way back home. After lots of prayers, God has helped arrange it so that he can return home this weekend. They needed someone to come back and take over at the place he worked at Ft. Hood and they asked him to return home early..... This is almost unheard of that you get to return early from a years assignment overseas! So, my Memorial Day will be a bit different this year.
For our family it not only will be a Welcome Home but a thank you to heaven above that he has been kept safe. Thank you to Ryan for his commitment to his country. He has been married over 2 years and the large majority of that he has been serving in a war zone. He has a wonderful wife who has learned to deal with his absence, but holds down the home front until he returns. Thank you to her as well for understanding that he has that commitment.

In addition I also have another son Pete, who is a Captain in the Marine Corps. He too is on active duty here in North Carolina. This weekend he is serving at an airshow representing the Marine Corps instead of being at home with his friends and family. He has spent a good amount of time being away from home and his 5 year old son Sawyer. It is so hard to explain to a little boy that his daddy has to be away in a far away place or on a ship for 6 months. That amount of time is a long time for a little boy!

My other reason for talking about welcoming people is that the beach has finally woken up!! We have lots of folks here visiting us and I say Welcome Back to them as well. We love to have you here for a visit. I decided to go over to the beach this morning to the office and had to go early because after about noon you have to wait in traffic. Well, this morning like many other times I got over and did my errands, and when I got ready to go back the traffic started.

As I approached the top of the high rise bridge over Bogue sound, there was a wreck at the top. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence in the summertime, as people are looking down at the beautiful views and then someone stops suddenly in front of them! Crash!!!! This one was three cars, nobody hurt but since it is single lane the traffic stops so the police and rescue squad can come and do their job. I went out about 2 hours later and the traffic was still sitting because there are just so many people wanting to get to that beach!!!

Our company handles rental properties and our group welcomed 450 families today and probably that many tomorrow as well. We truly do love having all of our extended family and visitors here on Emerald Isle. We welcome you back and hope you will have a wonderful visit here in North Carolina

Welcome Back to Ryan, my son and all of the military that are coming home from deployments. My prayers to all that are not here and to the families of those service members. Remember those who have given their lives for you and I in order for us to be able to enjoy our trips to the beach and all the things we take for granted. When you eat your hamburgers and hot dogs this Memorial Day weekend, say a little prayer of thanks to all of our Troops!!
We salute you the members of the Army, Marines, Coast Guard, Navy and National Guard!

Hello Motha, hello Fatha

Many of you may remember an old song called "Hello Motha, Hello Fatha" that was popular in the late 60's maybe? Well, that was one of those songs I remember really liking and it was about a kid who was writing a letter home to his parents from summer camp. It said it was really bad at camp and something like "they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining!" It came to mind today as I was travelling down the beach from Atlantic Beach to Emerald Isle. It has been raining here for about 5 days now. Today it has gotten sunny and warm in the 70's and people are appearing everywhere. The song continues with something like "wait a minute its stopped raining, kids are swimming, kids are sailing" and goes on to say that they should disregard this letter and that everything is fine at Camp Granada.

Like Camp Granada, Emerald Isle is sunny and warm again. Hopefully the weather will hold for the beginning of the rental season and the summer. Predictions say that we will see temperatures in the high 80's this weekend, so if you haven't planned your trip to the beach do it now!!! No time like the present.

Many activities are going on this weekend such as the Swansboro Rotary Fishing Tournament which starts on Friday evening and runs through the entire weekend. Or if you are really showing your redneck tendencies you can go to Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600 (NASCAR) which will run on Sunday evening. For me, its just hanging in the back yard, planting some flowers, maybe swimming in the pool and then taking the boat out after church for a leisurely ride in Bogue Sound.

Beginning tomorrow we will be overwhelmed with traffic, long lines and beach goers. Years ago when my kids were younger, we would go to the beach on Saturday and Sunday . One of my favorite things was to people watch so we would give a little commentary to the group as we watched people coming to the beach. It would go something like this......"check out dad he hasn't been out of his suit since last summer, you can tell by the farmer tan and the black socks he is wearing with his sandals. Aunt Polly is slathering up the kids with 50+ sunscreen, no chance that anyone will know they have been to the beach with her around!! Oh look, they have stopped at the Walmart to stock up..... Check it out they have the price tags still on the umbrella, and they have been fighting with it to keep it in the sand and not flying through the air, whacking some innocent baby playing on the beach."

The next time you are at the beach take a few minutes to watch some of the other folks coming for the first time this season. Don't get me wrong, we love visitors and can't wait for them to return. Its just fun to make up these little conversations while soaking up the rays.

Lets hope the sun will stay shining for the Memorial Day weekend, and say a prayer for our troops.

Graduation Time

Well, this is the month, all of the different schools are holding Graduation. When it all started some 8 months ago, it was senior pictures, followed by many different dresses, shoes and outfits for all of the different events to be held. My daughter Krista just graduated from Meredith College (an all girls college in Raleigh, NC) which is full of tradition. I never knew a school with no "official" football team and a sports program like the other state schools in the Raleigh area would have so much going on. We have had the annual Corn Husking activities, which to this day and after 4 years I really truly don't know what it is actually for. It is kind of like a spirit week between the classes with an evening and I mean an entire evening of about 6 hours of performing and competitions. My husband,Krista's brother and boyfriend still don't get it!

We had parents evening, 109th night (that many nights til graduation), class picnic and many others.

This is a wonderful school and my daughter has truly blossomed into a woman. She now has a new appreciation for the names, Coach, Chanel, Dooney & Bourke, Prada, BMW, Mercedes...... do I need to go on?? Thank you to the Meredith girls for this appreciation!

Back to the subject; we spent the weekend of Mothers day celebrating Graduation along with Class day where the girls were all dressed in white with one black left handed glove. (I kind of thought maybe Michael Jackson had an influence on this!) The black glove is worn only by classes who graduate in odd years! Who would have known?? Wonder where that one started, of course I asked but nobody knew! Along with this the Sophomore class (also graduating in an odd year, called the little sis class) does a daisy chain which is made out of real daisy's. They present the class with a parade of the chain and eventually placing it on the grass in the amphitheatre in the "09" shape! Very touching, but again the men are looking at each other like these girls are nuts or something! They also sing songs to each other using the Golden girls show theme "Thank you for being a friend".

Another tradition they do is decorate their graduation caps. Krista's was very cute where she said "Thanks Mom and Dad" and then had the Marine Corps and Army Insignia on it for her brothers Pete and Ryan. Very touching I thought! She could be seen from our seats in the stands by her cap so it was easy to take photos during the ceremony.

She has now been out of college now one week and still looking to use that degree in Accounting that her parents helped pay for.

On another note of graduation my hubby and I will be watching one of our grandsons Ben, who will graduate tonight from his pre-school. I wonder if they have any crazy traditions that 5 year olds do at this graduation? Maybe something like throw away the sippy cup or possibly just

run around and go crazy! I am sure there won't be any black gloves or chains of daisy's and songs with words that go with the Golden Girls theme song "Thank you for being a friend".

This mother is just glad that Graduation is over and once all of the bills are paid it will be time to start planning a wedding maybe???

Cold Monday Mornings

I am sure if you are on the East coast then you are experiencing what I am talking about, a Rainy, Cold, Dreary Monday morning. I knew it when the alarm went off, that when my little eyelids opened and I peeked at the transom above the window. There was no sunlight, just light and it was grey and cloudy!

Well at that point I decided I couldn't get myself back to sleep, so it was move on out into the wet world. Yes, of course along with the cloudy and wet it is also very chilly. I dressed and then after taking my grandson to school, I came home and re-dresseed, as I was way too under dressed for this weather.

Now, let me tell you that if you live in the north or even in the south it is expected to be rainy sometimes, but when you live at the beach, its is supposed to be warm this time of year and most of all sunny!!! NOT, today...... but maybe by the weekend.

Friday begins the "busy season" for us here on Emerald Isle. Everyone who owns a home will be here (unless its rented) and it will be crazy for the next 10 weeks. We love it because it is how we make our living. People will be everywhere and when you want to run out and get a bite for lunch or dinner you will have to plan it appropriately. The line at Rucker Johns, in Emerald Plaza will be out the door and the wait will be in excess of 30 minutes or a seat at Flipperz will take you a good 45 minutes to get. Patience is the key to getting that meal you really want.

Maybe by the end of the week I can get you some new pictures of the beach area. For now I will post my most favorite one from the concert I attended on Saturday with George Straight. Now some of you may ask George "who"? George is a country singer and he has had over 57 #1 hits in the country music genre. The concert was fabulous and like Springsteen, we knew all of his songs and the words!!!! He sang nothing that we didn't know!

So, back to work on this grey cloudy day, hopefully this has brought a little sunshine into your world today. Let me know your thoughts and we can discuss more topics this week.

This Weekend at the Beach!

Hopefully this weekend at the beach will be beautiful. For the last few days we have had the gray gloomy skies and thunder clouds all around. No serious rain but just enough to make it so you can't really enjoy being outside. Today started out kind of cloudy but as time has gone on it has warmed up and the sun is peeking through.
There are a few major events that are going on besides the weekly T-ball contest that Sawyer and his Mets will take part in on Saturday morning. Sawyer (my 5 year old grandson) plays or should I say he stands in the dirt and plays sometimes, and I help coach. When I signed him up I thought it would be fun for him to take part in a sport my children loved so much, he seems as tho he could take it or leave it. He doesn't know that he actually is rather good at playing. We all go out and watch and the kids have a good time throwing the ball and trying to catch it. I have enjoyed helping the little ones learn how to play, so it offers some rewards to me.

The Cherry Point Airshow is also going on this weekend. This is an annual event and this year they have changed around the performers, so maybe it will offer some new acts. For more information check out http://www.cherrypointairshow.com/. Because I lived in Havelock for 20 years this has become a yearly event for many people to attend. If you like aviation and like to watch different aircraft perform, this is the event you should seriously check into attending.

The event I know I am going to be attending is my first concert of the summer. I am sitting 6 rows off the stage for Country Great George Strait. George is a great singer and I had tickets to see him several years ago and he had to postpone the concert due to sickness. I have said that if he came close again, I was there ..... so, tomorrow I will be going to Raleigh to see him. I really enjoy his music and he has had so many big hits that I know the concert will be full of my favorites. Hopefully it won't rain this time, as many of the concerts get rained on because it is in an outdoor arena. Luckily, I have tickets under the pavillion so I should be safe!

For those who are planning on coming to the beach this next weekend for Memorial Day, you need to check out a few restaurants that I consider "must eat at" facilities. One is on Hwy 58 going towards Maysville, Riso's Restaurant. They offer an Italian style menu and have the best pizza in the area. They use fresh ingredients and the price is reasonable.
The other one I will mention is T&W Oyster Bar. After about a year under a different owner Earl Taylor has re opened the place. It is just like old times again! This year they are also doing all you can eat Crab legs on Monday and Tuesday, so if you are around, you need to check it out!
It is wonderful and you can sit there all night and eat if you would like!!!

I myself will be taking in a movie at the Cinema 16 this evening, so I have to go and see which one I haven't seen. The Soloist is a great movie, if you like movies that are based on real stories you need to see this one. My sister works with homeless people and after I saw it I realized this is what she deals with everyday! Check it out, its worth the money!!!
I will let you know how the weekend goes, let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment!!!

Closing Day!!!!

As many of you know I am a real estate Broker at the coast of North Carolina so with that being said you may also understand the title of my blog today. Its finally closing day!!!

Closing, which many would refer to is when you finish or end something such as a book. In the real estate world it is what we call "payday"! Closing is when the deal you have been working on for months or maybe years finally comes to an end; where the posession of real estate transfers from one owner to another.

The NC coast like many other areas of the country has been seriously experiencing a big downturn in sales of real estate. So, when I say its closing day that is a great day in my profession. Seeing that the last closing I experienced was sometime in the fall of 2008 before it got cold and Christmas came, I am thrilled today. Yes, it has been that long for some of us.

Luckily for many, the market is turning around and the banks are starting to let loose of some of the money that is available at those wonderful interest rates you hear about on the national morning shows. If you follow any of that information they are always telling you about different areas of the country you can find some great deals. Eastern/ Coastal North Carolina is the place you should be looking. We have some of the best deals on the beach at this particular time. Many owners are offering super incentives and bonus's for buyers. If you know of someone who is interested in investing in a property tell them to check out the homes in this area. http://www.bluewatergmac.com/ .

Anyway, back to closing day......... this afternoon we will go to the attorney's office and pick up the check for our part of the commission on this sale. It will be a wonderful feeling to put that into my bank account, only to see it leave again tommorrow!!!! But for one short moment in time I will have a feeling of accomplishment for being a part of this deal. The best part of it is that I have helped someone. I have helped the seller to get this particular property sold and that he is able to move on with his next investment. Many of these sellers immediately take the profits and move it into another purchase.

Tomorrow is another day......... I will move forward looking towards the next "closing day" which I hope will not be another 6 months from now!!!! I don't think my bank account can stand another dry spell such as the past one! I look forward to taking my check to the bank and it staying there for awhile, rather than going back out in another check the next day! The encouraging thing is that the market is picking up, and many of my friends and co-workers are experiencing their own "closing days" as well. So, I am thinking maybe the commentators that report the sales of real estate is down; should be talking to some of us here in Coastal NC, because the world could use some good news!!! Its "closing day!"

Blah Blogs

After much thought about this entire Blog situation I thought why not? We have as a society come to wanting things here and now so I thought that this is a great way to connect with those who want to know whats happening at our area of the beach "here and now".
Emerald Isle is located on the southern most island of the outer banks chain. We like to call it our own "little piece of heaven". It is primarily a family beach with many homes that are built on the ocean sands. Our company Bluewater GMAC Real Estate is the largest company that manages these properties for vacation rental purposes. Most people know that, but for those who are interested in vacationing this is the website you should go to in order to check out whats available. www.bluewatergmac.com We have prices variying from a condo/tel (motel room) on the beach to 9 bedroom "Sandcastles" which are all available for rent.
Also known as the top Real Estate company in Carteret county; Bluewater GMAC Real Estate also offers properties for sale. With 4 offices convieniently located on both the island (Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach) as well as on the mainland in Cape Carteret and Historic Beaufort, NC.
If you or anyone you know is wanting to invest or purchase property, let me know and I can get them hooked up with the right people to make this happen.

So, now that I have gone into my background of my job, I will be offering up local info, weather reports, activities, restaurant recommendations, and just the little things people want to know when they are visiting here. Its one thing when you go on vacation but when you want the "insider " information before you get there, its great to have a resource. I always look into the local scene before I plan a trip or find someone who is quite familiar with the place to get the "scoop" before I go. This is going to offer some of that for those who are interested.

In addition I will offer a little of what it is like being in a place that most folks save all year to go on vacation to. We truely have a wonderful place to live and will be sharing some of that with you as well. Be sure to check back frequently and ask me questions so that I can get you the information. This is meant to be an information blog as well.

Obviously, I could write forever, but lets get this posted so we can start getting on with the task at hand. Write, or comment so we can start planning your trip to the beautiful Crystal Coast of NC soon. Emerald Isle is a place you want to be.
